Extracts vs. Concentrates

What’s the difference?

Extracts
Extracts are a type of concentrate that are created using solvents (alcohol, carbon dioxide etc.) that wash the trichomes off the plant. Shatter, badder, budder and crumble are all examples of extracts.

Shatter

Is an extraction method using a hydrocarbon solvent (butane for example) to extract the raw oil. It is then run through an extensive heating/cooling process to ensure there are no more hydrocarbons. Due to the high temperatures used, the end result is a brittle, glass-like texture.

Batter/Budder

Is an extraction method using a hydrocarbon solvent (propane for example) to extract the raw oil. It is then run through an extensive heating/cooling process to ensure there are no more hydrocarbons. Due to the lower temperatures used the end results vary from a cake frosting consistency or sticky (like a sauce) or dry and lumpy (like a crumble)

Sauce

Is an extraction method using a hydrocarbon solvent (butane for example) to extract the raw oil. It is then run through an extensive heating/cooling process to ensure there are no more hydrocarbons. Although similar to how Budder & Shatter are made, the main goal for Sauce is to allow the major cannabinoids to crystallize and separate from the terpene-rich part of the extract. The end result is a sticky, liquid consistency. Sauces contain a high level of terpenes.

Crumble

Is an extraction method using a hydrocarbon solvent (propane for example) to extract the raw oil. It is then run through an extensive heating/cooling process to ensure there are no more hydrocarbons. Using a higher temperature than Shatter produces a texture that crumbles when handled.

Live Resin

Is an extraction method using flash freezing just minutes after harvest then the process begins by using a hydrocarbon solvent (butane for example) to extract the raw oil. It is then run through an extensive heating/cooling process to ensure there are no more hydrocarbons. The end result should be gold to deep amber and should be a balance of liquid and crystals.

Rosin

Is an concentration process that utilizes a combination of heat and pressure to squeeze resin from a cannabis plant, resulting in a translucent/amber sap.

Dry Sift/Kief

Kief is made with a concentration process, where Trichome glands that are mechanically removed from the plant through a series of screens, resulting in a fine powder.

So many cannabis concentrates, but where do you buy them?

Concentrates

Concentrates are made without the use of solvents and are produced using mechanical or physical means to remove and gather trichomes. Concentrates are typically more potent than flowers. Rosin, dry sift & kief are all examples of concentrates.
